The answer is sort of simple. Usually this occurs when someone is trying to collect a claim for less than $7,000.00—which is the Small Claims maximum. Small Claims is a procedure in the local District Court that allows anyone to file suit on their own (without a lawyer) up to $7,000.00. Its a fairly simple procedure and the Court personnel help with the paperwork and the process.

Sometimes, if we think it would be helpful, we will suggest other ways to try to get the party who owes the money to pay—again without hiring a lawyer.
